EURO 2016: Germany vs Poland match preview

World champions Germany will be looking to make it six points from six when they take on Poland at the Stade de France in Paris on Thursday night.

Joachim Low's side got their Euro 2016 campaign off to the perfect start last weekend, when they became the first team to win a match by more than a single-goal margin by triumphing over Ukraine 2-0. Toni Kroos and Jerome Boateng were particularly impressive for the Euro 2012 semi-finalists, but Ukraine did manage to cause them a few problems from set-pieces and quick counter-attacks down the flanks. Germany possess an abundance of attacking riches at the top of the pitch – although it must be said that the likes of Mesut Ozil, Julian Draxler and Mario Gotze were all relatively quiet for much of their opening encounter – but they will have to tighten up defensively if they are to claim the trophy in a month's time.

Nevertheless, it is easy enough to see why Germany are so well fancied to win their second international competition in a row in France this summer. The fact that they were able to record a victory without being anywhere near their best is more of a positive than a negative, and if they go on to get the maximum out of their attacking talent they will take some beating. The one major talking point is whether Low will continue with Gotze as a false nine or opt for traditional striker Mario Gomez up top instead, with the former better at dropping deep to help create but the latter more of a penalty-box presence.

Poland also got off to a winning start against Northern Ireland, with the 1-0 scoreline not telling the full story of their dominance. Arek Milik grabbed the key goal early in the second half, with strike partner Robert Lewandowski surprisingly quiet alongside the Ajax man. Grzegorz Krychowiak also performed extremely well in the centre of midfield, while teenager Bartosz Kapustka – who probably would not have started had Kamil Grosicki been fit – won plenty of admirers with his flair, skill and willingness to take opponents on. Poland were impressive overall but will be fully aware that their job is not done yet, and anything they can take from their clash with the world champions is likely to be considered a bonus ahead of a potentially fate-deciding meeting with Ukraine next week.

This match has the potential to be one of the most enjoyable in the group stage, with both teams much stronger going forward than they are at the back. Germany and Poland should also be a little more relaxed given that they were able to get three points on the board in their opening encounters, which could help to produce an entertaining game.

While Germany are rightly considered favourites to triumph, the value lies in backing Poland to nick a draw on Thursday evening. The odds on a 2-2 scoreline make that particularly tempting, while striker Milik could be a good choice for first goalscorer.
