Ollie Watkins Exposes Liverpool Weaknesses After Aston Villa Victory

Ollie Watkins delivered a blunt assessment of Liverpool’s defensive setup after scoring twice in Aston Villa’s impressive 4-2 win over the Premier League champions on Friday night. The England striker played a key role as Villa secured Champions League qualification for next season, overtaking Liverpool in the table with a dominant display at Villa Park.

Watkins scored Villa’s second and third goals of the evening, continuing his excellent record against Liverpool. Only Harry Kane and Andy Cole have scored more Premier League goals against the Reds than Watkins, who now has eight against the Merseyside club.

Speaking after the match, the 30-year-old explained how Aston Villa were able to exploit Liverpool’s defensive structure under Arne Slot.

“Liverpool play a high line and don’t play offside so they’re disjointed at the back and feel like there’s a lot of space for me to run into,” Watkins told Sky Sports.

“No disrespect to them, the centre-backs are world class but I spot space and opportunities. I like to run in behind.”

Watkins also reflected on his second goal, which was briefly checked by VAR before being awarded.

“Buzzing Pau [Torres] missed that, I knew I wasn’t offside. It’s horrible when it goes to VAR because you never know, but you can’t ask for anything more as a striker with a little tap-in there.”

More Defensive Problems for Liverpool

While Villa celebrated a huge victory and a return to Europe’s top competition, it was another frustrating evening for Liverpool and manager Arne Slot.

The defeat marked Liverpool’s ninth away loss in 19 Premier League matches this season, with the Reds conceding 33 goals on the road during the campaign.

Slot admitted after the game that Liverpool’s defensive problems have become a major concern.

“In general teams struggle more away from home but for a top team like us it’s far too many losses and dropped points,” the Liverpool manager said.

“That hugely has to do with the way we concede — it’s far too easy in general.”

Despite the defeat, Liverpool still remain in the race to secure Champions League football next season. Their place in the competition could be confirmed if Bournemouth lose at home to Manchester City next Tuesday. Otherwise, qualification will be decided on the final day of the campaign.
