Betting preview: Swansea - Tottenham

Carlos Carvalhal will be looking to make it two wins from two as head coach of Swansea City when his side welcome Tottenham Hotspur to the Liberty Stadium on Tuesday night.

Carvalhal was appointed as Paul Clement’s permanent replacement last week, after a 5-0 thrashing by Liverpool had kept the Swans rooted to the foot of the Premier League table. It was, in some ways, a curious appointment, with the Portuguese having been sacked by Sheffield Wednesday just days before, but the fact that he was available and has some experience of English football presumably helped to sway the board. Swansea supporters must have feared the worst when they saw their side go 1-0 down to Watford on Saturday, but late goals from Jordan Ayew and Luciano Narsingh turned the game on its head and brought Carvalhal’s charges a vital three points.

Tottenham were also victorious when they last took to the field, with Harry Kane’s hat-trick helping Mauricio Pochettino’s men to a convincing 5-2 triumph over Southampton in front of their own supporters at Wembley. The fact that Spurs did not play at the weekend means they now find themselves four points adrift of the final Champions League qualification spot, however, which means they will be under some degree of pressure when they take to the Liberty Stadium field. Nevertheless, there have been several signs that Tottenham are regaining their best form in recent weeks, so Pochettino and his players will have confidence in their ability to get the job done against Swansea.

Wilfried Bony (hamstring) will undergo a late fitness test for Swansea, while Ki Sung-yeung could also return to the matchday squad after shaking off a calf strain. Leon Britton (calf) and Kyle Bartley (knee) remain sidelined, although it is probable that both players would not feature even if they were at 100 per cent fitness. Carvalhal will be loath to make too many changes to his team after Saturday’s success at Vicarage Road, but Narsingh and Oliver McBurnie are both pushing for a spot in the starting XI after helping the Swans come from behind last time out.

Harry Kane has been suffering with illness and could miss out for Spurs, particularly with a London derby against West Ham United to come 48 hours after Tuesday’s encounter in Wales. Mousa Dembele will also be assessed as he attempts to shake off a hip problem in time to feature, but neither Toby Alderweireld (hamstring) nor Victor Wanyama (knee) will play a part. Spurs have had a week-long rest ahead of this clash and should therefore be fresher than their opponents, although Pochettino will have at least half an eye on the aforementioned meeting with David Moyes’ West Ham at Wembley.

Swansea will be buoyant after their triumph on Saturday, which was the type of win which could prove to be a turning point in their season. Tottenham will be a different proposition altogether in mid week, though, and it is hard to see the Welsh outfit avoiding defeat if Pochettino’s charges play anywhere near their maximum level. An away win with both teams to score is one bet worth considering, while Son Heung-min would be an astute choice to grab the game’s first goal.
