USMNT Star McKennie set for Premier League move

When an American gets the chance to play for a storied football club like Juventus, they are not in a position to say no. So, when USMNT player Weston McKennie was offered the chance to don the famous black and white stripes of Juventus it was a no-brainer. The Italian club were looking for a powerful midfielder to add more depth to the team, and the arrival from Schalke was seen as the right kind of addition. A forceful midfield presence with excellent technical attributes for his size, McKennie was a key player for Schalke and now has been a consistent presence for Juventus.

However, it looks like the Old Lady might look to cash in on an asset who has done well but could net them a large fee. With the need to bring together funds and to make midfield space for a marquee arrival in the summer of 2022 – potentially Paul Pogba – it is likely that McKennie will be the one to be sacrificed. He will be sold on most likely to a team in the Premier League, with interest coming from West Ham United, Newcastle United, and Tottenham Hotspur.

The player has been long linked with a move to England, and previously was subject to a bid from Aston Villa. However, it looks like the American will either join a team in the North East or make the move to London. Seen as a player with the attributes and mindset needed to thrive in the English game, McKennie is expected to be a perfect fit for the hustle and bustle nature of English football.

Will McKennie leave Juventus in January?

Some reports suggest that Juve will look to cash in as soon as January to try and build funds ahead of a summer splurge. However, with a tight midfield in terms of numbers, the Turin giants might decide to hold on until the end of the season to make that decision.

McKennie has been a star performer for his national side, but is struggling to make the same impact for Max Allegri. The Italian returned as coach this summer, and his old school style has been a clash with McKennie. Seen as a more free-spirited personality, the American midfielder has not seemed to be a natural fit with how Allegri likes to set up his midfields.

Despite an obvious talent, McKennie has never felt like a natural fit for the Italian game. A more combative and aggressive style is often at odds, too, with a team like Juventus who dominate the ball with such control. As such, it is likely that an exit will take place as McKennie looks to finally sample the much-beloved Premier League.

With moves to teams on the up in terms of their squad development, though, there is nothing to say that the USMNT star cannot flourish in England just as he did in Germany and, for a brief period, in Italy.
