Although rumours exist linking Aguero with Chelsea and, even more strangely, Manchester United, it appears a move to either France or Spain is the most likely. Internazionale, too, have been mentioned as a potential destination. However, Aguero is strongly linked to both Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain. According to reports in both countries, too, there is an intriguing link to Aguero going to either club: Lionel Messi.
Known to be among his most preferred teammates for Argentina, Messi has long wished to link up with Aguero at club level, it is believed. His exit also reduces the likelihood of a Messi move to England, as well. PSG have a strong Argentina contingent and have made the strongest move to get Messi ahead of almost any other club bar his current. The arrival of Aguero would also tally up with the strong South American core at PSG, including ex-teammate and friend Neymar Jr.
At the moment, though, Aguero is sure to have interest from Barcelona who will also see Aguero as a player to keep Messi around. Add in the need to add an affordable elite striker and a player with Spanish football experience, and it makes sense for all parties.
Where will Aguero sign?
At the moment, the only certainty is that one of the most prolific strikers in the Premier League era will be leaving City. The more interesting question is who will replace him at the Blues?
There is talk of various players, with the likes of ex-United hitman Romelu Lukaku linked, as well as the ever-linked Erling Haaland. At the moment, the one thing that appears to be clear is that City are targeting an out and out number nine; a striker who can lead the line with aggression and power. As is the case in the Premier League today, many clubs are lining up with strikers who can contain defenders as well as beat them on the attack.
Therefore, the likelihood is that City will arrive at the summer with the need for a young, quick, and aggressive powerhouse of a striker. With only a few in Europe meeting said criteria, then, we might see an ever-shortening list of players being linked with the City striking position.
Aguero, though, will move on as an undoubted legend and one of the best players to ever play for Manchester City. Despite injury-hit seasons in recent years, Aguero can leave English football knowing he done far better than even his biggest fans at Atletico Madrid might have assumed.
